Zero Hunger is a comprehensive social impact platform designed to combat food insecurity by connecting donors, NGOs, and individuals in need through technology. Built with Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB, and EJS templating, this server-side rendered platform creates a transparent ecosystem for food donation and distribution. The application features real-time donation tracking, community engagement tools, volunteer coordination, impact analytics, secure donation processing, and a comprehensive dashboard for NGOs to manage their operations. The platform includes geolocation-based matching to connect donors with nearby recipients, automated notification systems for urgent needs, and detailed impact reports showing how donations make a difference. Challenge
The primary challenge was creating a platform that efficiently connects food donors with those in need while maintaining transparency and trust in the donation process. Key technical challenges included implementing geolocation-based matching using Google Maps API to connect donors with nearby recipients in real-time, designing a multi-stakeholder system supporting individual donors, NGOs, volunteers, and beneficiaries with different access levels, creating real-time notification systems for urgent food needs using Socket.io, building transparent donation tracking showing the complete journey from donor to recipient, developing impact analytics to demonstrate how donations make a difference, implementing secure verification systems for NGOs and volunteers, and creating an intuitive mobile-first interface accessible to users with varying technical literacy. The platform needed to handle time-sensitive donation requests while ensuring food safety guidelines and maintaining data privacy for all users.
Results
Successfully launched a comprehensive social impact platform that effectively bridges the gap between food donors and those in need. The platform achieved geolocation-based matching connecting donors with recipients within a 5km radius, implemented real-time notifications for urgent food needs with instant alerts to nearby donors, and created transparent donation tracking showing complete journey from source to destination. Key achievements include building a multi-stakeholder system with role-based access for donors, NGOs, volunteers, and beneficiaries, developing impact analytics dashboard displaying metrics like meals served, food waste reduced, and communities helped, implementing volunteer coordination system with scheduling and task management, creating secure NGO verification process ensuring legitimacy of partner organizations, integrating Google Maps API for location services and route optimization, building real-time chat system for coordination between donors and volunteers, and developing mobile-responsive design ensuring accessibility across all devices.
